The thatched cottage in Alloway where Scotland's most famous poet, Robert Burns, was born is now part of the excellent Robert Burns Birthplace Museums. Burns spent the first seven years of his life there and the cottage houses a collection of Burns' most important writing, along with a great café and shop. One of the most popular attractions in South Ayrshire is Ayr Beach which is popular with locals as well as visitors to the area. This sandy beach is 3.5km long and is especially popular with families during summer weekends as there is a large play park next to the Ayr Pavillion and plenty of ice cream vendors, a putting green, as well as a games arcade and a café. Culzean Castle sits on the cliff tops of Ayrshire’s rugged coastline at Maybole, just 12 miles south of Ayr. A fortress had stood on this spot since the 14th century, but the present castle dates from the 18th century and is managed by the National Trust for Scotland.
